Safe Schools GuideSchool safety is an issue in which should not be taken lightly by teachers, school staff, students or parents. There are certain guidelines that both teachers and parents can follow to keep the school environment safe and ideal for creativity, development and growth.
Parents should never allow their children to take anything that resembles a weapon to school. Some things that may be typical household items such as nail clippers may be seen as a weapon because of their sharp nature. No knives or things of that nature should be taken to school. Although a toy gun is simply a toy it may strike fear in some students. Taking a toy gun to school is simply not permitted in most if not all school districts. Parents should be aware of what is in a child backpack before leaving for school as well as what is in it when they come home.
Teachers should also be advised of what is coming into the school building. Rumors may just be rumors but there may often times be fact to them. If there is a rumor that a child is carrying something that is prohibited on school grounds there should be a protocol in place that one should follow in order to find out if the rumor has any truth behind it. In other situations such as behavior proper protocols in dealing with certain behaviors should be put in place.
They key to any safe environment is communication. If a teacher has any type of suspicions or is worried about a child the teacher should contact the parent directly and vice versa. Children should always feel safe in their learning environment. It should be a nurturing place that produces creativity and logic. Both teachers and parents can help to make the environment just that through open and honest communication.
