#1 Read the Indicators and see how they apply to your school community.

School communities are not limited to Pre- Kindergarten through Secondary (High) School.  There are Two Universities developing a separate set of Safe School criteria for Safe Colleges and Safe Universities.

The International Safe Schools Guide

There are many resources and programs that are approved by the International Safe Schools Committee to assist in fulfilling the Indicators for Safe Schools.  The International Safe Schools Guide is a document undergoing constant revision with new electronic versions at least once per year.  The Safe Schools Committee formed originally to define the process and begin designating schools in May 2001 at the 10th World Health Organization International Safe Communities Meeting, now has a dedicated steering committee which has quarterly teleconferences to bring together new findings and research the effectiveness of the Guide and blend new tools with the older.

Application Form

The on-line Application form is available.  This form is used for both pre-application and application.  In pre-application, a school considers each indicator from the perspective of where they are now and how they intend to improve and prove they fulfill the indicator.

In the application for designation the school demonstrates with data and analysis how it fulfills and will continue fulfilling each indicator, including a record of where it has been, where it is, and the next goals.
