Crossing Guards

A crossing guard is a very important job as far as safety goes for those children that walk to school. Young children may not always know or understand the rules of the road even when they are walking so a crossing guard is there to help them on their way.

There are no real regulations as to who can and who cannot be a crossing guard. There are also no regulations set in place as to where a guard must stand in order to help students cross the streets. A crossing guard can either be paid or simply be a volunteer depending on the circumstance. These crossing guards unless they have been sworn in as a public safety officer have no actual legal authority. If a car proceeds through when a guard has his or her hand up that guard cannot stop the car. They can however attempt to forward the license plate number to the proper authorities.

Typically we see a crossing guard near busy intersections at our schools keeping the children of the community safe while on their way to learn. Guards are not only there in the morning but in the afternoons as well.
