Becoming a safe school is not only good for the school itself but also for the staff and the students learning and working in that environment. Actually being accredited as a safe school takes more than just one step, it’s more like one step at a time.

Schools must have a plan of action for emergencies, anything from a natural disaster to a bomb threat. Threats in schools are more real than ever and need to have a suitable plan of action. Transportation routes must be researched and approved by school board members and sometimes local police. In addition acts of violence as well as taunting, teasing, bullying or other types of violations must have set and clear cut consequences.

There are various organizations that a school can register with in order to show that it meets the qualifications of being a safe school. These organizations sometimes also offer action plans for schools seeking to be deemed safe.
