International Safe Schools Affiliates Criteria and Membership

International Safe Schools Affiliate Centres Criteria:

A Centre applying for this designation is seeking:

*        To publicly affirm its commitment to supporting safe school initiatives;

*        To contribute to knowledge development at the international level through the International Safe School, Safe Community Network and the WHO; and

*        Acknowledgement for its given area of expertise

Any Centre or organization seeking an Affiliate International Safe School Support Centre status must have a documented record of commitment and expertise in the field (minimum 3 years). It should also be noted that applicants submitting a proposal are expected to describe and define the “communities” they serve in the context of own environment. No universal definition is implied by the use of the word “community” within the criteria. Applicants must meet the following indicators.
 

1) The provision of Centre programs and services utilize multidisciplinary and cross sectoral approaches.

Rationale:

*        Supports mobilization efforts necessary for action at the school community level by modeling collaborative approaches

*        Strengthens and creates opportunities needed to build on the science and practice of injury prevention and school safety

*        Supports a comprehensive or systems approach to address injury problems

 

2) The Centre provides a framework for promoting collective action which includes involvement with school and community networks.


Rationale:

*        Supports local schools, communities and organizations to implement action at the local level

*        Supports targeted activities that address priority injury and safety problems

*        Nurtures focused attention on issues through focused school and community networks

 

3) The Centre provides consultative support to schools in the establishment of Safe School initiatives.
 

Rationale:

*        Promotes the understanding and adoption of the Safe Schools Model, adapted from the Safe Communities Model as a recognized colleague of the Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion, an initiative of the World Health Organization

 

4) The Centre facilitates and supports school community-based strategic planning processes.
 

Rationale:

*        Promotes the use and sharing of high quality information and data to guide community based action

*        Supports the development and use of evaluation strategies

*        Promotes the documentation of community-based efforts

 

5) The Centre demonstrates leadership and stewardship in addressing priority injury issues, high risk, and vulnerable groups.


Rationale:

*        Advocates for action based on the Centre’s knowledge of; the injury problem, at risk population, latest research findings and intervention strategies

*        Works with high risk and vulnerable groups to create opportunities for action


6) The Centre provides expert services and knowledge in the area of injury data and injury surveillance issues.
 

Rationale:

*        Provides community-based initiatives support to access baseline data required to plan program initiatives

*        Provides expert guidance in the documentation and monitoring of injuries and causes of injury

 

7) The Centre demonstrates a long term commitment to supporting Safe Schools and the International Safe School Network within their organizations strategic plan.
 

Rationale:

*        Ensures a sustainable resource to Safe Communities in their efforts

*        Ensures a strong learning partnership within the Safe Community Network

8) The Centre supports those responsible at the school level to utilize appropriate indicators to evaluate school processes, effects of change and injury rates.
 

Rationale:

*        Supports the development of evaluation mechanisms at the school community level to facilitate program management and delivery

*        Nurture community leadership and interagency collaboration through self evaluation

*        Promotes the capability of communities to act on their interests while promoting the use of a scientific approach

 

9) The Centre disseminates their experiences both at national and international levels.
 

Rationale:

*        Contributes to a body of knowledge of the Safe School Model within national and international Safe School and Community networks and others working within the field of community safety

 

10) The Centre reports on their safe school activities and research efforts.

Rationale:

*        Supports accessible and systematic dissemination of knowledge and experience.

Centres with appropriate qualified staff will also be requested to provide site visits for schools in their geographic areas, as well as be empowered to designate sites at their discretion, as the Committee decides.  It is imperative that all Centres be willing to participate in international teleconferences, virtual meetings, and annual international meetings.  Centres will receive compensation from fees for their work, and be able to charge for services, such as training and consulting services as standard professional work.

 The file must contain information on how your organization participates and commits to fulfill the 10 criteria. After review and acceptance by the Committee of your Organization, a fee of €650. Plus all costs related to a site visit.
